Veteran French coach Claude Le Roy has included Nigeria’s Super Eagles among the top contenders for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.
The Super Eagles are one of the most successful teams in AFCON history, having clinched the title three times. They narrowly missed a fourth title last year in Côte d’Ivoire, losing 2-1 to the hosts in the final.
Le Roy, who led the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon to AFCON glory in 1988, believes Nigeria is poised to challenge for the title once again.
“Senegal, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Algeria, and Egypt are always strong contenders in this competition,” he told LeSitelnfo.
He also highlighted South Africa’s progress under a top coach and pointed out that Cameroon remains a tough competitor to beat.
Nigeria will be facing Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania in the group stage of the tournament in Morocco.
The Super Eagles will kick off their campaign against Tanzania’s Taifa Stars in Fez on Tuesday, December 23.
