Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez, is retiring from international football, he announced at an emotional press conference.

Suárez made his breakthrough in his own country at Nacional from Montevideo.

It’s difficult, but this is the moment where I can play my last match for the national team in peace.

And I will do it with the same passion and motivation as when I played my first match for Uruguay, in 2007.”

“But now this player, a veteran already, or old, whatever you want to call me, with a great career in the national team, is going to give his life one more time on the field, because that’s what they taught me… to always give everything for my country.

I’m going, with the calm knowledge that I’ve always done everything for my country up until now. I’ve given the best of myself.”

Suárez is Uruguay’s all-time top scorer, with 69 goals in 142 international matches.

Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Paraguay will be the last match for Suarez.
