Ghanaian women’s club Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC have officially lodged a protest with the WAFU Zone B Secretariat and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over the circumstances surrounding their final against Edo Queens at the ongoing WAFU B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers in Burkina Faso.
The protest follows the dramatic final which ended 2-2 after 90 minutes, before Edo Queens prevailed in the subsequent penalty shootout.
According to Ampem Darkoa, the competition regulations communicated during the Management Committee meeting stipulated that any final ending level after regulation time should proceed to 2×15 minutes of extra time before a penalty shootout, if required.
However, the Ghanaian side claims that, despite having four substitutes ready to enter the game, the match officials proceeded directly to a penalty shootout after 90 minutes.
In an official statement dated September 11, 2026, Ampem Darkoa said there was “no communication” to the team before the decision was made to proceed directly to penalties.
The club argued that the decision was contrary to the express provisions of the CAF Women’s Champions League regulations and has consequently called on WAFU Zone B and CAF to review the circumstances.
Ampem Darkoa are seeking either the playing of the stipulated extra time or the continuation of the game from the point at which the penalty shootout was ordered.
The club stated:
“Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC have followed the competition’s regulations and done a protest to WAFU Zone B and CAF.”
The statement further explained that at the Management Committee meeting, participating teams were informed that 2×15 minutes of extra time would be played if a game ended level or in a draw during regular time.
“Only for the general Coordinator of our match against Edo Queens during the finals to order for penalty shootout without extra time at the end of 90 minutes which ended 2-2 draw with no communication to team Ampem Darkoa Ladies,” the club said.
The Ghanaian club added that four substitutes had been prepared to enter the match, but they were instead informed that the game would proceed directly to penalties.
“We had 4 substitutes ready to come in only to be told penalty shootout against the express written provisions of the CAF Women’s Champions League Regulations,” the statement added.
Ampem Darkoa have therefore formally appealed to WAFU Zone B and CAF, requesting “a play of the extra time or the continuation of the game.”
The club also thanked the Ghana Football Association for its support while awaiting the verdict of CAF and the WAFU Zone B Secretariat.
The outcome of the protest could determine whether the result of the final stands or whether the governing bodies will order further action following the alleged breach of competition regulations.
