World Cup Final: FIFA hands heavy sanctions to Argentina payers

FIFA has announced disciplinary sanctions against several Argentina and Spain players and officials following the heated scenes that marred the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes received the heaviest punishment, with FIFA handing him a 10-match suspension and a $90,000 fine.

His Argentina teammate Nahuel Molina was also hit with a seven-match suspension and a $90,000 fine.

Thiago Almada received a one-match suspension and a $30,000 fine, while Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was handed a three-match suspension and a $30,000 fine.

Spain midfielder Gavi was also sanctioned with a one-match suspension and a $30,000 fine.

The disciplinary measures follow incidents during and after the World Cup final, which featured heated confrontations involving players and officials from both teams.

According to the sanctions, the respective suspensions will be served during the affected individuals’ national teams’ upcoming international fixtures.

The punishments are expected to have an immediate impact on both Argentina and Spain as they begin preparations for their next international assignments.
