Patrick Vieira has been appointed the new head coach of the Senegalese national team, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has officially announced.
The appointment was confirmed on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, with the former France international taking charge of the Lions of Teranga.
Vieira, who was born in Dakar, returns to his country of birth in a new capacity after enjoying an illustrious playing career with France. He was part of the French side that won the 1998 FIFA World Cup on home soil.
The 50-year-old succeeds Pape Thiaw, who left his position following Senegal’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Vieira now faces the task of leading Senegal into a new era, with expectations high for the former Arsenal, Juventus, Inter Milan and Manchester City midfielder.
His appointment marks a significant return to his roots as he takes charge of one of Africa’s leading national teams.
