Samuel Ogazi on Thursday won Nigeria’s 10th gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, storming to victory in the men’s 400m final in Glasgow.
The 19-year-old sprinter clocked a commanding 44.25 seconds to secure the top spot on the podium.
Despite appearing to struggle approaching the final bend, Ogazi found an extra gear on the home straight to justify his pre-race favorite status. He pulled away decisively in the final 100 meters, leaving Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards to settle for silver in 44.82s, while South Africa’s Zakithi Nene took bronze in 45.21s.
Ogazi’s winning time fell just 0.01 seconds short of the Games record set by Grenada’s Kirani James. The triumph also marked his fourth consecutive head-to-head victory over Nene.
With this performance, Ogazi becomes the first Nigerian man to win the Commonwealth Games 400m title.
His victory further boosts Nigeria’s medal tally as the country continues its impressive outing in track and field events at the Games.
