Iran has made a U-turned on its earlier decision to boycott the 2026 FIFA World Cup, formally requesting that its group-stage matches be played in Mexico rather than the United States, where they were initially scheduled.
The Iranian authorities informed FIFA of their preference amid concerns over the geopolitical climate in the region. Just days prior, Iranian officials had described participation in the tournament as “impossible” due to the scenario of war and regional instability.
As of now, FIFA has not issued an official statement regarding the potential change of venue for Iran’s matches in the co-hosted tournament, which will take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
This development adds a new layer of complexity to World Cup planning, with football fans and officials alike awaiting clarification from FIFA.
