FIFA has approved a set of rule adjustments expected to be implemented at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

These measures are largely aimed at reducing time-wasting and improving officiating accuracy through expanded VAR oversight.
Key Rule Changes

1. Faster Substitutions
A substituted player must leave the pitch within 10 seconds.
If the player exceeds that time, the incoming substitute must wait one minute before entering the field.

2. Stricter Throw-in Timing
Players will be required to take throw-ins within 5 seconds.
Failure to do so will result in the throw-in being awarded to the opposing team.

3. Medical Treatment Protocol
Players who receive on-field medical treatment will have to leave the pitch.
They must wait one minute before being allowed to return, a move designed to discourage players from stopping play unnecessarily.

4. Expanded VAR Authority

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will now be allowed to intervene in additional scenarios, specifically:
Second yellow card decisions that lead to a red card.

Corner kick decisions where a clear refereeing error is identified.
Objective of the Changes

These modifications are intended to:
Reduce time-wasting tactics
Speed up the flow of matches

Improve refereeing accuracy, especially in key moments.

If fully implemented, these rules could significantly influence match tempo and tactical management during the 2026 tournament.
