Nigeria internationals Ademola Lookman and Raphael Onyedika were on the scoresheet as Atlético Madrid and Club Brugge battled to a pulsating 3-3 draw in the first leg of their playoff tie on Wednesday night.

Lookman continued his impressive form in Europe, becoming the first Atletico Madrid player to score on his Champions League debut since Héctor Herrera against Juventus FC in September 2019.

He is also the first to achieve the feat as a starter since Ángel Correa netted versus SL Benfica in September 2015.

Atletico made a bright start and went ahead in the eighth minute when Julián Álvarez calmly converted from the penalty spot.

The Spanish side doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time, with Lookman finishing clinically in the fourth minute of added time to put the hosts firmly in control at the break.

However, Club Brugge responded strongly after the interval. Onyedika pulled one back in the 52nd minute with a well-taken effort before Nicolò Tresoldi drew the visitors level on the hour mark.

With 11 minutes remaining, Atletico regained the lead after an unfortunate own goal by Joel Ordóñez made it 3-2.

But the drama was far from over as Onyedika turned provider in the 89th minute, setting up Christos Tzolis to fire home the equaliser and ensure the tie remains finely poised.

The return leg will take place next Tuesday at the Metropolitano Stadium, with both sides still in contention for a place in the next round.
