FIFA President Gianni Infantino has hinted that world football’s governing body may consider lifting the long-standing ban placed on Russia.
Russia has been suspended from FIFA and UEFA competitions since its invasion of Ukraine, a decision that has kept Russian national teams and clubs out of international football for the past few years.
Speaking on the situation, Infantino suggested that the ban may no longer be achieving its intended purpose.
“We have to. Definitely. Because this ban has not achieved anything, it has just created more frustration and hatred,” Infantino said.
He further emphasized the role of football as a tool for unity and social connection, particularly among young people.
“Having girls and boys from Russia being able to play football games in other parts of Europe would help,” he added.
Although no official decision has been made, the comments from the FIFA President signal a possible shift in policy, with discussions expected within the football governing body on the future of Russia’s suspension from international football.
