South Africa national team head coach Hugo Broos has openly criticised the organization and overall atmosphere of the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, insisting that previous editions of the tournament were better.

Speaking to the media, the Belgian tactician expressed disappointment with what he described as a lack of the traditional AFCON spirit, comparing the current tournament unfavourably with past editions he has experienced.

“I don’t feel the same atmosphere compared to what I felt in Gabon or Ivory Coast. I don’t know how to explain it, but in Ivory Coast and Gabon, you really felt you were at a major tournament,” Broos said.

The former Cameroon coach, who led the Indomitable Lions to AFCON glory in 2017, suggested that the unique energy and vibrancy usually associated with the competition have been missing so far in Morocco.

Broos’ comments come as the group stage of the tournament draws to a close, with several teams already booking their places in the knockout rounds.

While the quality of football on display has been praised in some quarters, concerns over fan engagement and tournament ambience have also been raised by observers.

Despite his criticism, Broos maintained focus on his team’s objectives, stressing that South Africa remains committed to pushing for success regardless of off-field challenges.
