CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe has revealed that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will move to a four-year cycle following the 2027 edition.

According to Motsepe, after AFCON 2027 jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania the continent’s flagship football tournament will next be staged in 2028, before continuing on a four-year basis in 2032 and 2036.

The announcement signals a major structural change in the AFCON calendar, which has traditionally been held every two years.

The CAF President explained that the adjustment is aimed at better aligning the competition with the global football calendar, easing congestion for players, clubs and national teams, while also enhancing the commercial and sporting value of the tournament.

Further details on how the transition will be implemented, including hosting arrangements and qualification timelines, are expected to be communicated by CAF in due course.
