The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has clarified its position regarding the continued omission of Washington Spirit forward, Monday Gift, from the Super Falcons squad ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Gift, who was absent at the last WÀFCON in Morocco, was again left out of the squad for the recent qualifying match against Benin Republic a decision that sparked public debate among fans and analysts.
Speaking to UK-based Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, an NFF official who requested anonymity stressed that the federation is not responsible for her exclusion, insisting that head coach Justin Madugu has complete control over team selection.
“The coach has been told that her exclusion from the team can’t be justified to Nigerians. He said the player will be in his WAFCON 2026 plans. But her inclusion is still up to him. We don’t force players on any coach,” the official stated.
Monday Gift, known for her pace and scoring ability, remains one of the country’s top attacking prospects, and fans will now await Madugu’s final decision as preparations for the 2026 WÀFCON intensify.
