Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has dismissed reports suggesting that the team demanded a special bonus ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs.

The Nigerian players boycotted training in Rabat, Morocco, on Tuesday over unpaid allowances and bonuses. In a joint statement, the players and officials confirmed their action, stating:

> “The full squad including officials boycotted training today in Morocco because of the unresolved issues with outstanding payments. The Super Eagles are awaiting a quick resolution to continue preparations for Thursday’s game against Gabon.”

Troost-Ekong took to social media to clarify that the team’s protest was not about any additional or special bonus.

> “Any other statement or claim, especially demands beyond the rightful request mentioned below, are FALSE,” the defender posted on X, referencing a post that accurately reported their call for overdue payments.

Reports indicate that the players are demanding settlement of outstanding bonuses owed over several years.

The Super Eagles will face Éric Chelle’s Gabonese side in the semi-final of the World Cup playoff at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex in Rabat on Thursday.
