Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle has made clear Nigeria’s primary target ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco  to win the title.

Nigeria finished as runners-up in the last edition of the competition in 2023, narrowly losing to Côte d’Ivoire in the final. Speaking to CAF, Chelle expressed both his personal and collective ambition to lead the Super Eagles to continental glory this time around.

“Of course, we want to win it. Personally, I want to win AFCON. My last and first AFCON was a fantastic experience,” the coach said.

Looking ahead to the tournament, Chelle expressed confidence in the team’s mental toughness and readiness to handle the pressure of competing at the highest level.

“I think Morocco will be a great tournament, too. The players feel the same. Since March we’ve played every match under pressure. When we set foot in Morocco, that pressure will be familiar. We’ll be ready mentally and in our collective mindset,” he added.

The Franco-Malian tactician also acknowledged the strength of the competition, noting that several nations are in good form.

“If we arrive on the back of play-off success, stopping us will be difficult. But there are big teams: Morocco are favourites, Tunisia, Côte d’Ivoire… nations in top form.

“Our strength is that the players have suffered, then found a way through. That can really hurt opponents.”

The Super Eagles will aim to capture their fourth AFCON crown when the tournament kicks off in Morocco next year.
