World Athletics, the global governing body for track and field, has revealed that it uncovered a massive case of corporate theft involving two employees and a consultant who allegedly embezzled over $1.7 million from the organization over several years.

According to reports, the discovery came after an internal audit and investigation into suspicious financial activities within the federation’s accounts. The governing body stated that the individuals involved manipulated financial processes and diverted funds for personal gain.

In an official statement, World Athletics confirmed that the matter has been referred to law enforcement authorities for further investigation and potential prosecution. The organization emphasized that strict internal control measures have now been strengthened to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“We are deeply disappointed by the actions of a small number of individuals who breached the trust placed in them,” World Athletics said.

“We are also determined to recover whatever monies we are able using the full force of the law to do this. Too many organisations brush incidents like this under the carpet, terminating employment with limited information which allows perpetrators to continue their scams and thefts within new organisations. We are not that type of organisation.

“We have built a strong reputation for good governance, transparency and for defending what is right, even if it is sometimes a little uncomfortable. This is uncomfortable but it is important that we do the right thing.”

The governing body added that efforts are ongoing to recover the stolen funds and that disciplinary actions have been taken against those implicated.

The incident marks one of the largest financial scandals in the organization’s recent history, raising fresh questions about oversight and financial governance in global sports administration.
