Burkina Faso defender Steve Yago has expressed deep frustration over the qualification format that allowed Nigeria to progress to the CAF World Cup playoffs ahead of his country.

The Stallions narrowly missed out on a playoff spot despite finishing strongly in their campaign, and Yago didn’t hold back his feelings when reacting to the outcome.

“Honestly, it’s strange: you win your games against the weakest team in your group, yet Nigeria is ahead of you, even though they haven’t beaten Zimbabwe, who are last in their group,” Yago said. “Apparently, beating the bottom team is too mainstream. Thank you, CAF and FIFA! My career is nearing its end, so I’ll start studying the system to criticize you properly soon.”

Yago’s comments reflect the growing discontent among Burkinabe players and fans who believe the qualification system favored certain teams.

Nigeria secured the playoff ticket on goal difference after finishing level on points with Burkina Faso, a result that has stirred debate across the continent.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has yet to respond to the concerns raised, but discussions over the fairness and transparency of the qualification structure are expected to continue.
