Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has spoken about the immense pressure that comes with representing Nigeria on the international stage.
The Saudi Arabia-based defender was an unused substitute on Tuesday as the Super Eagles thrashed Benin 4–0 to book their place in the playoffs of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
“Responsibility is part of being in this team, and today, many players stood up and took that responsibility. We’ve seen that throughout these qualifiers,” Ekong said.
“It’s not easy to wear this shirt — it’s very heavy. It’s not easy to perform, get results, and make everyone happy. But we’re all giving our best.”
The 2023 AFCON MVP also acknowledged the challenges the team has faced due to instability in the coaching setup.
“There’s been so much change within this team, but the boys are trying. It’s been a process that needed time. During these qualifiers alone, we’ve had four different coaches,” he added.
