SAFA CEO confirms FIFA probe into Mokoena eligibility

South African Football Association (SAFA) Chief Executive Officer Lydia Monyepao has confirmed that the organisation has received formal communication from FIFA regarding its investigation into the Teboho Mokoena suspension saga.

Bafana Bafana risk losing three points – and suffering a major goal-difference swing  as their 2-0 victory over Lesotho could be overturned to a 3-0 defeat. The midfielder was reportedly ineligible for the March qualifier due to an accumulation of yellow cards but was still fielded.

Initially, it seemed South Africa had escaped punishment when Lesotho failed to lodge a protest within FIFA’s 48-hour deadline.

However, world football’s governing body has now opened an official inquiry, citing past precedents where teams lost points for similar infractions.

“We have received communication from FIFA about the investigation they have launched regarding the Lesotho match in which Teboho Mokoena was fielded. We received it yesterday,” Monyepao revealed at the Shield/Vaseline sponsorship launch on Thursday.

“We are preparing our response to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, as is required of us as an association.”

Despite the looming risk of Benin leapfrogging them on goal difference, SAFA remains optimistic that Bafana’s fate lies in their own hands ahead of their final World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in October.
