The uncertainty surrounding South Africa’s choice of venue for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers has finally been resolved, with the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein officially cleared to host Bafana Bafana’s crucial matches.
World football governing body FIFA, in collaboration with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has given the green light for the 40,000-capacity stadium popularly known as Toyota Stadium—to stage the qualifiers.
The decision comes as a relief for the South African Football Association (SAFA), which had faced days of speculation and doubt over the stadium’s readiness and compliance with international standards.
Concerns had been raised over certain infrastructural aspects, but after thorough inspections, both FIFA and CAF have deemed the venue fit to host the matches.
Bafana Bafana will begin their September fixtures against Lesotho before locking horns with continental powerhouse Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the same venue.
