Brazil suffered a 1-0 defeat to Paraguay on Tuesday, the top country’s fourth defeat in five matches in World Cup qualifying.

Colombia beat Argentina 2-1 to avenge their defeat in the Copa América final.

Brazil lost in Asunción to a goal from Diego Gómez in the 20th minute. It is the first victory for Paraguay over the ‘Divine Canaries’ in regular time in sixteen years.

For Brazil, it is the fourth defeat in the last five World Cup qualifiers. The five-time world champions lost to Uruguay, Colombia and Argentina in October and November last year. On Saturday, the team of national coach Dorival Júnior broke the negative streak with a 1-0 win over Ecuador.

Brazil has now dropped to fifth place in the South American group of ten countries. The top six teams qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup. There are ten more qualifying matches for Brazil.

Colombia defeated world champions Argentina 2-1 in Barranquilla. James Rodríguez emerged as man of the match with a converted penalty and an assist for Yerson Mosquera’s goal. Nicolás González scored for the away team.
